EU and Competition in Finland

Tier 1: Merilampi

Merilampi boasts excellent client feedback, premium clients and regular appearances in landmark cases, including acting for Skanska in the asphalt cartel case, the biggest in Finnish history, and advising Fortum in appeal proceedings pending in the Supreme Administrative Court following its merger with E.ON and conditions laid down by the FCA. The practice also advises competition law client, Finnair. Arttu Mentula ‘always makes himself available’, is ‘quick’ and heads the ‘first-rate’ practice.

Dispute Resolution in Finland

Tier 1: Merilampi

Clients at Merilampi describe it as ‘medium-sized but of the highest quality’. Disputes work is a core area, evidenced by the stream of headline cases it attracts, for example, representing defendant Amer Sports in the long-running tobacco product liability case, where all charges against Amer were dismissed. The practice, led by Jukka Laitasalo and Ari Kantor, also acted for Fortum in a landmark competition case alongside E.ON.

Corporate and M&A in Finland

Tier 2: Merilampi

Despite a strong focus on dispute resolution work, Merilampi’s talented team attract a fair number of major domestic deals, such as representing Kesko Corporation in the €30m sale of shares of K-Rahoitus to OKO Bank (now Pohjola Bank). Partner Jani Ylä-Autio is widely admired by clients, described as ‘an excellent guy’ and ‘very strong in negotiating agreements.’

Real Estate and Construction

Tier 2: Merilampi

Merilampi has advised on several cross-border real estate portfolio deals as well as heavyweight domestic transactions, including representing Capman on the acquisition of a 39-hotel portfolio from Northern European Properties, which at €800m is one of the largest real estate deals in Finland, and advising Merrill Lynch and others on the sale of landmark office building Merikortteli to ING Real Estate. Partner Jani Ylä-Autio is ‘really good and well-experienced with property deals,’ note clients.
